Exactly! I know I hate a hard sell, so I wouldn’t dream of doing that to someone else. It’s uncomfortable and feels desperate. I’ll buy a book if I’m interested in it (or the author). But it’s a complete turn-off if I’m pushed; I won’t buy it AND I’ll end up with a negative view of the author.

Great tips. =) Pretty essential to building a reader base, too. If someone walks away with a book feeling hustled, they’re probably not going to become a long time reader. If they walk away feeling good about meeting you, and buy a book later, they’re much more likely to become a long time reader and buy your next books.

Great ideas! I have a unpublished children’s book. I would also recommend that you get involved with an organization like SCBWI and get to know the trends in the industry. It helped my partner and I target the right markets.
